An Interview with the Author of New York City's Greatest Boxers

What was your inspiration for writing the book?
I came across several books published by Arcadia that focused on the history of boxing in several
cities.  I felt that New York City's own history had to be a part of the series.

What will readers find interesting about the book?
The images are excellent.  There's also a lot of information, some of which hasn't been told for
decades.

What writing advice would you give to aspiring authors and historians?
They must make sure that they know the material thoroughly and must never give up.  They
should also have an idea of how to make the book marketable.

What lasting impact do you hope you book will leave?
II hope the book will serve as a tribute to the many boxers who gave it their all in the ring an in life.

THE sport magazine

More than a sport’s novel!

St. John of the Midfield is an almost mystical story of one man’s journey from communist Bulgaria
to his hope of living the American dream. Garasamo Maccagnone teases his audience into
believing the story is simply sports oriented until the plot unfolds and the reader is emerged into
a deeper and darker set of circumstances.
It’s not often a book comes around about soccer or any athletic endeavor that isn’t riddled with
clichés, contrived scenes, or predictable plot lines. In the novel, “St. John of the Midfield,”
Garasamo Maccagnone clears the literary landscape of any such devices to tell a simple but
powerful story through the eyes of Mario Santini, the team’s assistant coach and father of a
soccer prodigy. Mario feels trapped by two worlds: he is caught between the dark worlds of his
gangster father and the sinister Sonny Christopher, while also seeing daily the goodness of
Bobo. As a consequence of Bobo’s success and eccentric ways of teaching, enemies like
Christopher return, and the plot twists and turns until the final chapter.
Maccagnone weaves “St. John of the Midfield,” on different levels, often and carefully contrasting
opposing views of his Sicilian versus Polish ancestry, opposing loves of two sports like boxing
and soccer, opposing views of his real world misfortune his father has brought versus the dreams
of the after life his mother and Mario desperately long for.
“St. John of the Midfield,” is a sure-fire page-turner, a book that is highly recommended for your
reading enjoyment. It’s the kind of book a reader will savor for a long, long time.

Garasamo Maccagnone is the author of, “The Suburban Dragon,” a children’s book and a
collection of poetry and short stories entitled, “The Affliction of Dreams.” He can be contacted via
